Una dintre cele mai avantgardistice trupe ale scenei Metal se pare ca s-a decis sa paraseasca orientarea underground dura, intunecata, explorand teritorii comerciale, mult apreciate si consumate astazi. Altfel, THE KOVENANT ne-a prezentat in decursul anilor albume cat mai diferite, de la genialul „In Times Before The Light”, trecand printr-un „Nexus Polaris” inspirat si un electro Black Metal „Animatronic”. Reeditarea debutului facuta anul trecut sub bannerul Hammerheart ne prezinta un sunet modern, cu mult sintetizator, efecte diferite si voci distorsionate. Noul album are ca baza de plecare doar albumul „Animatronic”, efectele sunt asemanatoare cu remasterarea debutului, elementul Cyber amestecat cu franturi electro de avantgarda pun stapanire pe intregul sound, ritmul exploziv fiind intrerupt ori de pasaje atmosferice spatiale ori orientale si deseori de influente Power Metal, Punk sau chiar Funk. Adica ritmul sacadat tinde sa ne dezvaluie o cu totul alta fata a muzicii norvegienilor, vocile normale si sobre amintindu-mi de DEPECHE MODE, cele mixate distorsionat sau agresive comunicand bizar cu un keyboard rezonant si cu voci feminine diferite, ale caror inflexiuni trec prin diverse faze, de la cele de opera, melodice pana la cele tribale sau „bizantine”.

Albumul este unul extrem de lucrat, foarte bine conceput si executat, cu destinatie probabila fanilor EBM sau chiar LAIBACH. Din punct de vedere Metalic, „S.E.T.I.” este o parodie disco-electro-Power haioasa si exploziva, ce degaja o energie fantastica si are un tonus ridicat. Dimensiunile synt/keyb sunt insa ametitoare iar riff-urile chitarilor, desi crude si zgomotoase, ofera ascultatorului o stare unica si foarte dinamica. Din alt punct de vedere, o reala provocare pentru cei ce doresc schimbarea, noutatea si ritmurile saltimbance. Desi nu ma atrag astfel de sonoritati, ba chiar le consider puerile si simpliste, THE KOVENANT mi-a dovedit ca pot asculta un astfel de album mai bine de trei zile consecutiv. Ori am devenit si eu unul de-al lor, ori. albumul merita mai mult decat critici subiective. nu stiu! Oricum, trupa nu mai are nimic in comun cu Black Metal-ul sau cu dimensiunea Dark, ci doar cu cea indulgent spusa Metalica. Prea soft pentru suparati, prea zgomotoasa pentru tabara Electro. Insa, o reala si meritata provocare!

One of the most avant-gardes bands on the Metal scene, which seems to have decided to leave the dark tough underground orientation exploring now new commercial territories more appreciated and consumed these days. Otherwise, THE KOVENANT has offered, during the years, various albums, starting with the brilliant „In Times Before The Light” or an inspired „Nexus Polaris” and an electro Black Metal album such as „Animatronic”. Re-printing the debut of last year, under Hammerheart label, provides a modern sound, with synthetizer, various effects and distorted voices.

The new album seems to have as basis solely „Animatronic” album, while the effects resemble with the re-mastering of the debut. The Cyber element, mixed with electro frames of avant-garde, simply masters the whole sound, while spatial atmospheric passages or oriental or even Power Metal, Punk and Funk influences often interrupt the explosive rhythm. The staccato rhythm tends to unveil a new face of the Norwegians’ music, clear, sober voices merely remind of DEPECHE MODE at the same time as the distorted and aggressive ones seem to communicate in a weird manner with a resonant keyboard and various female vocals passing from opera, melodic until tribal or Byzantine profiles. The album is for sure very well conceived and performed, having probably as target fans of EBM or even LAIBACH. From the Metallic perspective, „S.E.T.I.” is a Disco-Electro-Power parody, a little funny and explosive, discharging a fantastic energy.

What I can say for sure is that the synth/keyb dimensions are amazing and the guitars’ riffs, although vindictive and noisy, plainly offer to the listener a unique and dynamic mood. From a different point of view, this album could be a challenge for those who are looking for a change, freshness or tricky rhythms. However, I am not attracted to such sonorities… on the contrary… I find them rather puerile and simplistic but THE KOVENANT actually proved me that I could listen to an album for more than 3 consecutively days. Either I became one of them… or the album really deserves more than subjective critics… I would not know for sure! Nevertheless, the band has nothing in common with -indulgently said- the Metallic one! It is rather too soft for the Black people and too noisy for the Electro camp… Yet, it is a challenge and it is worth it!

Cei ce ma cunosc stiu ca acest album este unul dintre primele zece preferate de mine! Mai mult, ascultarea acestor zece secvente ma intorc cu mult in urma, pe vremea cand „Einherjum” magazine incerca sa-si lanseze propriul label, trupele debutante fiind COVENANT si TROLL. La vremea respectiva un astfel de sound nu parea atractiv pentru label-uri, IMMORTAL sau GORGOROTH fiind moda! Dupa cateva tentative nereusite, COVENANT semneaza pentru label-ul britanic Mordgrimm si realizeaza acest album. Nu s-a bucurat de promotie, nu s-a facut cunoscut suficient, insa cei ce urmareau cu atentia evolutia celor doi stiau ca „In Times Before The Light” este o capodopera. De aici si surpriza (pentru majoritatea) semnarii cu Nuclear Blast. De la pasul „Nexus Polaris”, istoria devine cunoscuta si succesul lor cu „Animatronic” a spart topurile. Reeditarea primului album (cel preferat de mine) vine in contextul si unei remixari integrale a sunetului, clapele bombastice beneficiind acum si de cateva valente Electro-Industrial, materialul fiind o punte de legatura intre vechi-nou, totul pe latitudinea THE KOVENANT.

Nu are rost sa va povestesc prea multe deoarece norvegienii (Nagash si Blackheart) sunt artisti in tot ceea ce fac, deci ar trebui sa fiti incantati. Mi-a placut albumul, mi-au placut noile influente, sunetul este acum unul modern, plin de elemente simfonice, atmosferice, cu o voce primitiva lipsita de remixari si o baterie cicalitoare pe alocuri. Putem spune ca este o noua fata a celor zece piese, prezentate acum ascultatorului intr-o dimensiune spatiala de exceptie: Cyber Space Majestic Black Metal.
